Penn students interested in French can start learning French in the beginning level, or continue their studies in the appropriate course after determining their proper level based on prior study and/or examination. Students wishing to fulfill the language requirement in French will need to complete the intermediate level, French 0400.
At the advanced level, the department offers a wide variety of courses including language, literature, linguistics, culture, business, film, etc. Students may opt to pursue a Francophone, Italian, and Germanic (FIGS) major with a concentration in French and Francophone Studies, a minor in French and Francophone Studies, or a French Language Certificate.
The department strongly encourages study abroad and sponsors a summer program in France (Penn Summer in Tours), as well as several semester/year programs in France.
