Fall 2020 French Course Updates

All courses at the undergraduate level in French will be delivered online.  Given the constraints required for in-person class meetings (students socially distanced 6 – 8 feet apart and wearing masks), it would be impossible to adequately meet our pedagogical goals which entail regular interaction among students, both in a whole class setting, as well as in small groups and pairs. Our experience has shown that we can meet these goals effectively in Zoom, particularly through the use of breakout rooms. Most of our courses will include 75 – 100% synchronous sessions where we will recreate as much as possible the dynamics of the classroom experience.  The synchronous sessions will take place at the scheduled time posted in the roster. In the synchronous sessions of our 100-level courses you can expect to have frequent oral practice in small groups in Zoom breakout rooms, where you will complete tasks collaboratively that you will bring back to the whole group.  Asynchronous course activities will include participation in the online Canvas Discussion Board, completing Canvas quizzes (both graded and ungraded), working with video and audio texts, and using the social reading tool Perusall to annotate reading texts. For further details on the structure of the course you are taking check the course prospectus posted in Courses InTouch.
